Alphabet Connection series.
Illustrated by
Clair Rossiter.
This science-lite picture book assigns one dinosaur for each letter of the alphabet, accompanied by pronunciation guides for each name. Well-suited for very young dinosaur fans, the breezy introduction provides a wide range of basic facts about various prehistoric creatures, punctuated with onomatopoeia (Zoom!, Chomp!, etc.) and further lightened by cartoonish illustrations. Reading list. Glos., ind.

Alphabet Connection series.
Illustrated by
James Loram.
Each letter of the alphabet is assigned to a different monster or creepy word (such as "J is for jitters"). While aimed at an (advanced) alphabet-book crowd, the book still manages to relate correct information about the folkloric, literary, or pop-culture monsters (e.g., "Remember, Frankenstein was the scientist, NOT the monster!"). Goofy, cartoonish illustrations lighten the gently spooky ABC. Reading list. Glos., ind.

Everyday Alphabet series.
With upper- and lower-case letters, an alphabet page-header, and lots of crisp color photos, these books are attractive if slight. The highlighted items are random (shoes, nectarines, umbrella in Store; apples, easel, umbrella in Park), and boxed text provides the briefest amount of information, some obvious ("Eating vegetables keeps you healthy"), some repetitious ("Eating asparagus helps you stay healthy"). Ind. Review covers these Everyday Alphabet titles: ABCs at the Park and ABCs at the Store.

A+ Alphabet Books series.
Close-up photographs vividly depict what each letter of the alphabet is for: "C is for catch," for example, shows a border collie in full flight catching a Frisbee. The words fit the letters well and repeat their sounds, and three or four more sentences flesh out the information about dogs and their lives. This is a fine ABC book for new readers, with highly engaging illustrations. Reading list. Glos., ind.
