Burmese nine-year-old Subhi has always lived in the awful conditions of an Australian refugee camp. After Australian girl Jimmie sneaks into the camp, the two strike up a friendship, which provides some comfort as Subhi's situation deteriorates further. Fraillon's story is stark and urgent, with occasional glimmers of hope shining through in Subhi's lyrical narration. An afterword discusses the "all-too-true reality" behind the book.

Timeline, websites. Bib., ind. Review covers these Champion on Freedom titles: Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Aung San Suu Kyi, and Nelson Mandela.

Bookish Chiko is press-ganged into the Burmese army. His faith and humanity serve him well after he's captured by Karenni rebels and taken to a refugee camp in Thailand. Halfway through, the novel switches to the viewpoint of Tu Reh, a Karenni boy involved in Chiko's capture. Writing in a present tense that adds urgency, Perkins draws a persuasive picture of contemporary Burma.

Nick is sent to live with his father in Burma to escape the 1941 London bombings. Instead of safety, Nick finds himself separated from his father in the midst of the Japanese invasion. Accompanied by new friend Mya and her beloved elephants, he plots a rescue. Appealing characters and fascinating historical context drive this adventure to a disappointingly tidy conclusion.
