Bird's compilation includes twenty-eight entries from "laugh-out-loud funny" female children's book creators including Cece Bell, Carmen Agra Deedy, Mitali Perkins, and Libba Bray. A good mix of formats are represented (short stories, comics, poems, etc.), and topics include family, friendship, puberty, and identity. The types of humor, too, are varied, with some pieces more slapstick-y and others evoking laughs while tugging at heartstrings.

These effective, if formulaic, biographies are well documented with chapter notes. Information boxes supplement the main texts (for instance, a reference to Mark Twain seeing a Pony Express rider is accompanied by a sidebar that provides a brief overview of the Express).
