There's a lot going on in this third volume in the graphic novel trilogy about the Tessier family (Resistance; Defiance). The series continues to be remarkable in its engaging, accessible presentation of a complicated chapter of World War II history.

In this sequel to Resistance, danger escalates when Paul joins the Maquis (freedom fighters in the forests) and Sylvie uncovers Nazi plans to raid their hideouts. The graphic novel format effectively portrays the layers of story and emotion, words and visuals working in tandem to bring the tale to life. Historical notes at the beginning and end contextualize the events.
