Ever since fifth grade, Martha "Marty" Sullivan has been happy with just one friend: flamboyantly gay Jimmy. But now she's attending an all-girls' Catholic high school, which expands her social horizons both among girls (rebellious new friend Xiang) and guys. This mostly light comedy of errors is an honest portrayal of the cluelessness inherent in early high schoolers.

Bob the bear mostly likes to sit; if he's "feeling zany," he might go for a (slow) walk. His panda friend Jack surfs and rides roller coasters. As Bob and Jack play together, they prove that opposites attract and friendships may flourish. The two are fittingly depicted in the illustrations, with Bob's backgrounds simple and spare while Jack's are full of color.

A survey of homosexuality in pre-modern America begins this outline of twentieth-century gay and lesbian life, ending with the legalization of gay marriage in Massachusetts in 2004. It's a lot to cover, but the book hits all the mile- (and mill-) stones, personalized with frequent anecdotes and well-selected photographs. The tone is newsy, occasionally glib, but the information is solid. Bib., ind.

Mildred, a lonesome elderly woman, finds companionship by befriending a baby elephant, which she thinks is a stray puppy. After the elephant returns to his circus, Mildred is lonely again--until she discovers a "kitten," which is actually a camel. Her mistakes are almost too absurd, but the lightweight tale is amusing. Uncluttered illustrations show a diminutive Mildred with exaggerated features.

On a solo around-the-world trip, Mrs. Claus enjoys the change of scene, but she misses Santa. Meanwhile, Santa keeps busy by baking and decorating, but he's happy to see his wife again. Alsenas's wry, folksy illustrations alternate between cozily framed images of domesticated Santa and double-page spreads of Mrs. Claus following her bliss.
