Betrayed by love and exhausted from battle in King's Cage, Mare and her united rebel front seek unexpected reinforcements for the war against the mentally unstable king, Maven. Several of Aveyard's narrators are unapologetically elitist, which makes for interesting character studies but unsympathetic story lines. However, the political scheming and elemental fighting that ensue should maintain readers' interest in this fourth and final novel.

Following the events of Glass Sword, book three opens with Maven holding Mare prisoner. Political upheaval and one-upmanship force everyone to choose sides and decide how far they'll go to win the war between Reds and Silvers. Though the book is slow to start, the political plotting is as fascinating as it is disturbing. Mare's emotional growth is believable, but secondary characters are flat in comparison.

Mare's paranoia and hurt over Maven's betrayal in Red Queen threaten to turn her as dark as her enemies as she rushes to recruit others with red blood and powers before Maven can find and kill them. Characterization and consistency are sacrificed to move the plot, but readers wanting drama, action, and a strong emotional hook will still appreciate this second volume.

In a society in which people are divided by their blood color, supernatural-powered Silvers rule over those with red blood. When Mare, a Red, discovers a power of her own, she is drawn into the deadly world of the elite Silvers. Mare's realistic confusion and grief at her situation ground the action and political machinations. A promising debut for fans of dystopian fiction.
