Nick is cursed with a voice in his head that narrates what is going to happen, and if he deviates from the script, he suffers excruciatingly. Gwen should be excited that her boyfriend, Wish, is moving back to town, but all she can think about is how fat she's become. Sandman Eron looks forward to becoming human and seeking out his charge, Julia. However, Eron's chance at humanity depends upon his replacement-–who happens to be Julia's possessive boyfriend, Griffin. Griffin's jealousy leads to a taut (if somewhat abrupt) climax endangering both Eron's precious opportunity and Julia's life. Romance and action are well-balanced by the characters' coming of age.
