In this Swiss import, Peter, Wendy, Tink, Hook, and the crew have the appearance of somewhat sketchlike paper dolls; the "Redskins," including Tiger Lily (with feathered headdress and rosy cheeks), are all smiles throughout. Individually, the images have some appeal, but as a whole they're a little cutesy for the novel's darker themes.

Trina Schart Hyman's version of this classic is back in print (again--previous reissue was 2001), with the illustrations--both black-and-white drawings and full-color acrylic paintings--fairly floating off the pages.

This reissue of the one-hundredth-anniversary edition is notable for its painterly illustrations, which reflect touches of Sendak, Wyeth, the pre-Raphaelites, and others. The overall effect of the art is impressionistic, and the book itself is handsome.

The classic Peter Pan story, in Barrie's original whimsical text, is reprinted here, matched in style and imagination by Vess's black-and-white chapter-head illustrations and periodic interior art. Peter is feral and swashbuckling, the pirates are satisfyingly piratical, and the children are at once brave and innocent. Vess's compositions are dynamic and alive; it's a pity there isn't more art.

This illustrated edition of Peter Pan features a new design to mark the classic's one hundredth anniversary. Ample white borders make the text-only pages seem more manageable; full-page color paintings perfectly suit the fantastical adventures of the text. This edition has an eye fixed firmly on the classic stories illustrated by N. C. Wyeth and others in the early part of the twentieth century.

Based on James Barrie's classic Victorian story and culled from the Disney archives, the artwork for this picture book version of Peter Pan was originally published in a Golden Book inspired by the 1953 Disney film. If this is but a shadow of Barrie, it is pure vintage Disney.

Barrie's famous story has been illustrated by numerous artists since its original publication in 1911. This edition of the novel includes over one hundred pictures by more than sixteen artists from the early part of the twentieth century. Although some book collectors may be interested in this compilation, general readers will find the wide variety of artistic styles distracting.

With their flat, appropriately childlike compositions, the paintings' color palette captures a sense of the classic story's dreaminess. Line drawings, as well as smaller painted vignettes, appear throughout the book.
