In this surreal, wordless summertime story, a young girl explores outdoors until her grandfather calls her inside. They walk to the train station to meet a small, sailor-hat-wearing elephant, who brings stress and disharmony. After the elephant departs, the girl returns to exploring nature--but not before a final moment of surprise. Lush colors and screenprint patterns radiate from the roughly textured pages, creating an open-ended, dreamlike reading experience.

The French illustrator (Seasons; People) is as provocative as ever in this graphic celebration--and parody--of the very idea of story. Each chapter begins with a précis, but it is Blexbolex's square illustrations, captioned with just a couple of nouns, that convey the action: a queen, a kidnapping, dragon, volcano, rescue, escape, etc. An intriguing book to unravel, decode, and ponder.

Like Blexbolex's Seasons, this French import is another graphically distinguished compendium of two hundred or so creatively paired words and phrases in block capitals. The accompanying poster-style art features flat areas of color on near-white backgrounds enlivened by subtle stippling. Conceptually, this isn't as creatively organized; still, it makes a visually and intellectually stimulating companion.

PS
This volume is both beautiful and intriguing--artist's portfolio, concept book, and word book rolled into one. The words, in huge, vividly pink block capitals, caption full pages and spreads for which seasons are the organizing principle. Motifs include weather, trees, growth, and renewal. The poster-style images range from minimalist to expansive and are sure to stimulate creative thought.
