An orphan from Massachusetts finds her long-lost mother, now a wealthy landowner, in San Francisco's hurly-burly Gold Rush days. Blos turns this romantic premise into a credible journey of self-discovery for thirteen-year-old Eldora, whose letters to her cousin Sallie convey a good sense of daily life and the diversity of the people thrown together during this historic period.

A toddler and his grandfather search the house for the little boy's sandals. They find all kinds of things before they find the favorite shoes. The hunt is a good excuse for learning concepts--including colors and numbers--and the story is just right for young listeners and ends with a song The pastel illustrations are soft and warm and suit the cozy feeling of the story.

It's bedtime, but a little boy says he isn't sleepy. He admits, however, that his three stuffed animals might be tired. One by one, his grandma tucks them in, and as she reads them a story, the boy joins her and afterward climbs sleepily into bed. The chalk illustrations' deep, lush colors are soothing and inviting.
