This quick overview of some of the physical, emotional, and social issues surrounding adolescence is superficial and heavy-handed at times (especially the discussion of sexuality). Pre-teens may, however, be drawn to the book's general information and to the posed but contemporary color photographs. This look at anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive eating discusses oppressive fashion trends, compares eating habits among different cultures, and profiles individuals dealing with body-image issues. Less successful are staged photographs of ostensibly tormented teens, which strain for effect and undercut the non-preachy approach of this ultimately cautionary book. Bib., glos., ind.
