Illustrated by
Elizabeth Fuller.
A girl, her friend, and her stuffed bear Barney show up for Harold Hinkle's birthday party looking clean and neat. After Barney gets a paint makeover and goes for a swim in the fish tank, and the children fall out of a pirate ship hammock, they all agree it was a great party--but Harold Hinkle's mom has to go lie down. The kid's-eye perspective is perfectly understated, while the pen-and- ink and watercolor illustrations show the other side of the story.
