John, imprisoned for a double murder for which he bears ambiguous guilt, uses his out-of-body ability (something like astral projection) to investigate the murders while gathering dirt on inmates and guards to trade for safety. Spoiler: the two are connected, somewhat too neatly. John's backstory, sparingly doled out, is well integrated into the central mystery, but secondary characters, particularly women, are shallowly written.

When a long-dead body is uncovered--with cryptic numbers scratched into the bones--Nearly Boswell (Nearly Gone) investigates, suspecting that her father's old poker club is involved. Despite Nearly's efforts to decipher the criminal's many physics- and chemistry-based riddles, the killer manages to stay one step ahead until the should-have-seen-it-coming end. This suspenseful sequel packs the same degree of chills as its predecessor.

High school senior Nearly "Leigh" Boswell's suspicions that there's something sinister about the Missed Connections ad in the newspaper are confirmed when a classmate is found unconscious, the number ten written on her arm. Someone is trying to frame Leigh, but she doesn't know who or why. STEM enthusiasts can rejoice: the riddles--including what the various victims' numbers mean--involve math and science.
