A girl who's just returned from a beach vacation discovers a clever way to extend it: she flings the yellow sand from her shoes into her yard, and it grows a field of yellow beach umbrellas, a crop of lemon-flavored ice-cream cones, and so on. Delacroix adds another layer of dazzle by working largely in black-and-white, which makes the book's yellows shine extra-bright.

Many picture books feature reluctant sleepers, but this specimen is among the better ones. Maybe it's the omniscient narrator's informality ("The night is such a pain!"). Maybe it's Blanche's boisterous defiance (one illustration catches her mid-somersault). Maybe it's the visual range Delacroix achieves with a palette of black on slate blue. Whatever the reason, this small book offers big payoffs.

"Jenny doesn't say good morning..."; "Jenny doesn't want her new polka-dotted dress." Jenny is, frankly, a brat. But she's also a perfectly believable toddler, especially when she lets on that her prickliness is something of an act ("Wait...Is that a smile, Jenny?"). Her telling facial expressions dominate the square, modestly sized book.
