With lawful jinni ruler Nalia presumed dead (Blood Passage), the resistance to cruel usurper Calar continues from without (led by Nalia's love interest Raif, whose opposition to the caste system sets them at odds) and from within (Calar's consort-turned-traitor). While descriptions of Calar's sadistic cruelty can feel gratuitous, the vivid prose, complicated romance, and multi-layered climax make this a satisfying finale to the trilogy. Glos.

(3) YA Seventeen-year-old Grace wants to escape her authoritarian parents to live a big, artistic life; then Gavin, an older, tortured wannabe–rock star, falls for her, and Grace finds a big romance instead. Addressing Gavin directly in an energetic, occasionally scathing second-person voice, Grace recalls the dramatic, damaging relationship that consumed her senior year. This intense, empowering read illuminates the messy, painful romantic dilemmas many teens face.

Recently freed jinni Nalia (Exquisite Captive) is torn between her love for the jinni rebel leader, Raif, and an obligation to her former master, Malek, when they travel to Morocco in search of Solomon's sigil. This second Arabian Nights–inspired adventure features lush writing, innovative world-building, and plenty of religious and cultural details that will delight aspiring globetrotters and fantasy fans alike.

(3) YA He's just returned from a tour in Afghanistan with one less leg and survivor's guilt. She's counting down the days until she can leave her "blink town" for art school. Nineteen-year-old Josh and eighteen-year-old Skylar find solace in each other's company and develop a complicated relationship. The intimate, vivid dialogue and multilayered characters immediately draw readers into this emotional story.

(4) YA Chloe Baker has worked hard to distance herself from her past as one of twelve children on a reality television show. Now her mom and stepdad have agreed to resurrect the show, and Chloe must confront the pain and betrayal she feels about being forced to live life on camera. Like reality TV, this is a diverting, drama-filled read without much depth.

(4) YA Dark Caravan Cycle series. Held captive by a powerful human in Los Angeles, upper-caste jinni Nalia agrees to aid Raif, the leader of the rebellion that destroyed Arjinna, in exchange for her freedom from both her master and a deadly Ifrit assassin. Though the story is frequently interrupted by clunky exposition, the lyrical writing, lush setting, and unlikely romance will enchant many readers.
