Twelve-year-old Taylor is discombobulated by her family's move to a farm. A friend devises TEFF (Taylor Escapes From Farm), a plan in which Taylor acts out to convince her parents that moving was a mistake. Meanwhile, readers learn interesting, authentic details about everything from spinning wool to birthing lambs. Plucky Taylor, though lightly sarcastic, never comes off as unlikable or bratty.

Jack the cat constructs the perfect nest for a chicken to lay an egg (so he can make an omelet), but the luxurious nest also attracts a duck and a goose. When the eggs hatch, Jack becomes an unwilling mama. Manders's large, exuberant gouache paintings have exactly the right cartoony style, with everything just a little cheesier and larger than life.

In four brief stories designed for beginning readers, Eddie steals eggs, greedily cleans out a jam jar, digs a hole, and runs from a skunk. Each story has a short introductory summary; simple, repetitive language; and a humorous twist at the end, with Eddie landing in some kind of trouble. Soft watercolor and ink illustrations boost the humor and the child appeal.
