Vivien, Shirin, and Ingrid form unlikely and complicated friendships when they meet at an exclusive Swiss boarding school in 1971. Over three summers, García tracks each girl's transition from innocence to independence as the mature-acting characters face an abundance of coming-of-age issues: dating, sexuality, family drama, etc. The young women come alive through crisp dialogue and vivid details.

For her birthday, Pilar's uncle brings her a stray puppy. Pilar loves to dance, but Paco the pup instead pines after the moon. The text, which incorporates some Spanish, is wordy, but the denouement is sweet. Digital illustrations have a classic Golden Books look, complete with color on characters' cheeks represented by perfectly round circles.

Eighth grader Yumi asks Saul, her grandfather, recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, to tell her his life story. His tale is engaging (if rife with clichéd advice), and Yumi's own narrative is packed with details about her Cuban-Japanese-Jewish heritage, family issues, school orchestra problems, etc. There's too much going on, but readers will find Yumi and Saul's stories of interest.
