Fourteen "strong biblical women" from the Old Testament are profiled in an informative and inspiring volume. A colorful, Gauguin-like illustration begins each informative chapter, all of which end with a fictionalized first-person story and a poem. Extensive sidebars and marginalia further elucidate topics; readers are referred to specific Bible verses for the original stories. A handsome book, suitable for study, research, or gifting. Recently arrived Russian immigrant Jacob invites his new friend Benito to his family's first Passover Seder in Argentina, a meal that must overcome a few mishaps. The plot is thin, but both the text and realistic full-page gouache paintings convey the warmth of the ceremonial spring meal, and of the new friendship. An author's note discusses nineteenth-century Russian Jewish immigration to Argentina.

After giving each other gifts they want for themselves, the Knoodles learn that with presents, one should keep the recipient in mind. Goldin's story is told simply, allowing readers to figure out the solution long before the noodlehead Knoodles do. Details such as Papa Jack's ponytail and Shayna's braces in Katz's pastel-colored digital illustrations give the Knoodles personality.

Sarah and Max vow to earn extra money to make a mountain of blintzes with which to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Shavuot. But the two apply the coins from their extra jobs to more pressing family needs, and it is their children who save the day: they perform chores for neighbors in return for the necessary ingredients. The charming story is based loosely on a traditional Chelm tale. The cheerful illustrations are well drawn and replete with narrative detail.

In this eloquent collection, eight tales about the prophet reinforce the notion of Elijah's ubiquity: he might be anywhere, at any time. Each of Goldin's poignant adaptations opens with a note about its history and how she shaped the tale. Author and artist transport us to the third century C.E. of North Africa, Argentina in the late nineteenth century, Persia in the 1100s, the Caribbean in the 1600s, and seventeenth-century China.
