A worm sits on a leaf with a hole in it. "Who eats worms for lunch?" "Not me!" says a mouse. With a page turn, the hole shows up in a piece of cheese: "I like cheese! Yummy!" Each page links to the next until it all comes back around full circle. The die-cuts provide the kind of peek-a-boo action that toddlers adore.

Animals find an unfamiliar object in the forest. Each asks, "What is this?" before using it to suit his or her needs--as a hat, bed, etc. When a boy finds it, the curious animals gather around as he reads aloud. In the watercolor and ink illustrations, subdued forest hues contrast with the bright red book, highlighting just how "wonderful" the discovery is.

"What will I be when I grow up?" asks a boy. The natural world models some ideas: a cutout shaped like a raindrop becomes, with the turn of a page, a gushing river, and so on. It's an inventive format for an imaginative book that concludes satisfyingly with the boy's wish for his future: to be just like daddy.

Little rabbit Danny has never seen snow. He ventures outside to discover that the trees and bushes are now lambs and elephants made of snow waiting to play with him. Though the dialogue is bland ("'What is snow?' asked Danny"), the story's simplicity and Gore's subtly shaped acrylic and pastel snow creatures will capture readers' imaginations.
