In this collection of eighteen poems about African animals, Harley makes decoding the acrostics part of the fun. Noyes's vibrant color photographs, taken mostly in Namibia, are creatively composed and capture each animal's unique qualities. Together, poetry and photography make for a superb collection; the appended animal facts are a bonus.

Invite a butterfly to sip from "the friendly smile / of a watermelon." Watch while a "Monarch splits / Apart its chrysalis pajama." Or listen to "Only a whisper from ancient roots, / and cyclones of orange rise" when the butterflies migrate to Mexico. Delicate colored-pencil illustrations accompany these eighteen poems of uneven quality. Notes about the poems are included.

These undersea-themed poems run the gamut from contemplative ("...Will you always be here / Swimming with me?") to silly (a crab explains, "A toe-pinching scrimmage / has damaged my image...") to conservationist ("Do not pollute / this pristine sea: / an anemone's enemies / are you and me"). The book's design is thoughtful, and the accompanying photographs are stunning.
