Mia's dying grandfather, her alcoholic single mother, and a new job in an entomology lab help her understand the reasons behind her poor choices. Mia's transformation, though slow to begin, is authentic and affecting.

Benita falls in love, then out of love, with an islander and learns the mysteries of the island's spirits and its people. Although evocative in setting, the novel suffers from an inconsistent narrative voice.
