White is introduced in spare text and warm images, with a focus on his love of nature and animals plus the creation of his first two children's books. Herkert effectively evokes White's own prose, filled with sensory detail and phrases that roll off the tongue. Castillo's illustrations mirror the text with natural colors and lively drawings of the young boy growing into the adult writer. Bib.

Born into slavery, Harriet Powers grew up to produce "story quilts" that garnered the attention of post–Civil War collectors. This accessible biography introduces readers to Powers's work and to the struggles faced by slaves before and after the war. Text boxes extend the narrative, as do Brantley-Newton's engaging illustrations. Images of Powers's quilts are featured on the endpapers. Bib.

Sharing Nature with Children series.
As an encouraging introduction to bird watching, this book suggests practical ways to attract backyard birds, such as setting out simple birdbaths and food. More information and resources appear in the back matter, including an ambitious plan for building a nest box. Illustrations from different perspectives are accurate, but a stippled background interferes with easy identification, especially in the smaller representations.
