In 1870s Poland, Leo must flee his home after an altercation with a local aristocrat. Later, Leo befriends Tomasz, a clever street urchin, and the two live by their wits as they travel toward the coast and a ship bound for America. Hinton's writing too often relies on melodrama, but his story is compelling.

While in England following the second World War, four friends discover an unexploded bomb on an abandoned property. Despite a few lapses into melodrama, the novel effectively explores the ramifications of one's actions and the sustaining nature of boyhood friendship while presenting a strong portrait of time and place.
