Promises of Dr. Sigmundus series.
Dante is an orphaned, abused kitchen boy who (illegally) dreams nightly. Beatrice is a doctors' daughter unwilling to take the legally mandated drugs that would make her spiritless. If only they could both leave their home, an asylum in the country of Gehenna. The late introduction of fantastical elements into an otherwise non-magical dystopia muddles this series opener.

Remembering nothing of his previous life, Jacob wakes up in a drab, depressing world where he and other teens spend their days picking up rocks in a field. After deciding that they might all be dead, Jacob sets off to find the fabled Palace of Remembrance. Though some characterizations are flat, Keaney's plot twists keep readers guessing.
