Teenage sociopath Morgan meets Janelle--who's being shipped off to relatives to get her away from her bad-boy boyfriend--and assumes her identity. When Morgan's escape plan fails, she finds that even the juvenile justice system has valuable lessons for her future career as a grifter. A fast-moving tale of unapologetic self-interest with assured first-person narration both distinctive and chilling.

The secluded Winthrop Hopkins Female Academy (where the eight young heroines learn the graces necessary for a profitable marriage) sees an unexpected influx of eligible gentlemen. A tidy conclusion delivers some personal triumph for each young woman--and a few betrothals. This Keeping the Castle companion is as light and quick as the girls' playful banter. Kindl's command of the Regency voice and style never wavers.

Althea's impoverished family's fate rests on her marriage, but there are formidable obstacles. The arrival of handsome Lord Boring and a party of friends from London sets the neighborhood aflutter. As mishaps pile up, Althea blithely meddles in others' romantic affairs while remaining endearingly obtuse about her own. Kindl effortlessly takes on the classic Regency romance in this witty novel.

With Greek myth as its framework, this novel has the trappings, though not the structure, of a tragedy. Most engaging is Kindl's ability to imagine what it would have been like for a princess to live in the labyrinthine Palace of Knossos, to be in love with a slave, to try--and fail--to save those she loves, and to live after that failure. Attentive to archaeological detail and emotional probity, Kindl brings the Minotaur myth to life.

Alexandria, the sharp-tongued heroine of this farcical fairy tale, is a "simple Goose Girl," orphaned and alone. Then an old woman gives her three "gifts": her hair emits gold dust, her tears turn to diamonds, and her face is "as lovely as the dawn." It's no wonder she winds up locked in a tower. Readers can't help but become invested in Alexandria's sometimes comical, sometimes harrowing plight.
