Kurtz gives five criteria for living things, with examples and exceptions shown for each. He concludes that science doesn't offer a "perfect" way to differentiate between living and nonliving things, but when something displays all those five characteristics, it's probably living. Impressive photos, simple text, and activity pages make this an appealing tool for introducing a complex concept. Also available in Spanish. Glos.

Engineering Keeps Us Safe series.
Thanks to engineering, improved athletic equipment has made sports less dangerous. In well-written, not-overly-technical prose, this book examines the technology used to create items such as performance-enhancing footwear that also prevents injuries and more controllable mountain bikes. Clear diagrams and well-captioned photos complement the informative text. This series could spark interest in STEM careers. Reading list, websites. Bib., glos., ind.

Illustrated by
Consie Powell.
"It's eight o'clock in the salt marsh; / the tide is really low." For each hour of the day, Kurtz provides a rhyme about salt marsh creatures. Powell's detailed paintings, three to a page, show overlapping wide-area, mid-range, and close-up views. The appended text about salt marsh plants and animals is more informative than the sometimes confusing poems.
