A preface by the author-illustrator's son (who's a lawyer, author, and Fox News personality) frames the book as a patriotic antidote to negative portrayals of police. Despite this politicization, the book is a straightforward, folksy addition to the community-helpers oeuvre.

(3) PS A youngster gives a straightforward description of his dog. Childlike, artfully composed drawings on a textured brown background show Spot going about his canine business, endowing him with personality and suggesting affection behind the matter-of-fact hand-lettered text. The Levins' introduction notes the real-dog inspiration for the story, originally written sixty years ago; a preface by their son Mark is also included.

(4) YA Roots of Terrorism series. These books examine the history of terrorism, both nationally and internationally. The authors name individuals and groups (past and present) engaged in terrorist acts, explore their motives, and probe the causes of terrorism. The books are informative, but the drab textbook format fails to generate interest. Photos, charts, maps, and numerous sidebars enhance the series. Reading list, websites. Bib., ind.
