This companion to The Undrowned Child finds Teo and Renzo traveling from a now frozen-over Venice to London in pursuit of villainous Bajamonte, who they suspect plans to annihilate both cities. Rich historical backdrops again show Lovric's research (an author's note elucidates "what is true"), but this magic-imbued book's circuitous plot, which seems to hint at another sequel, may tire some readers.

In 1899, eleven-year-old Teo discovers a mysterious book in Venice. The book communicates with her about a plot to destroy the city to which Teo is inexplicably drawn. Venice's history, well researched by Lovric, is carefully woven into the story's complex and rewarding mythology. The whole package will please fans of Cornelia Funke, Zizou Corder, and Kai Meyer.
