Brilliant teenage engineer Tristan has been training since age twelve to be among the first families to colonize Mars. Despite being aware of his upcoming journey, he falls in love with Izzy, which complicates things. When a terrorist group threatens the mission after launch, Tristan questions its worth. With likable characters and a well-realized setting, Maberry's space epic should have wide appeal.

X-Files Origins series.
Two companion books reveal separate murder mysteries that left teenage Fox Mulder open to conspiracy theories and Dana Scully a scientifically minded skeptic, while also setting them on paths leading to the FBI. The stories read like episodes of the TV show with tight, quick-moving plots and a few twists and supernatural touches thrown in for good measure. Review covers these X-Files Origins titles: Agent of Chaos and Devil's Advocate.

Nightsiders series.
Now hunted for his war-altering artifacts, eleven-year-old scavenger Milo (The Orphan Army) learns the Huntsman has a new magical ally. Plenty of danger keeps the plot racing, but other than a few reveals, little develops in this second sci-fi/fantasy mash-up. Milo's moral struggles and his friends' attempts to put differences aside will keep readers interested as Maberry sets up book three.

Nightsiders series.
In a dystopic America ravaged by monstrous alien Bugs, eleven-year-old Louisiana boy Milo teams up with also-beleaguered magical creatures such as werewolves, dryads, and witches (the Nightsiders) to challenge the invaders. The pace and plot are uneven: at times overly talky and descriptive, at others full of action. But the mix of science fiction and fantasy is original, and Milo is a character worth following.

Benny (Rot & Ruin; Dust & Decay) and friends continue their quest to find proof that humanity, as it was before the zombie apocalypse, still exists. Complicating their journey is the rise of a death cult that is preparing for war against the survivors. Maberry's third series entry is an epic tale of survival that is as thoughtful as it is gory.
