Matt Christopher series.
Brooklynite Malik Edwards is inspired when he sees an African-American world champion golfer on television. Shortly thereafter, he finds a set of golf clubs in a trash bin and takes up the sport himself. Despite some implausible dialogue, the story features an admirably motivated protagonist, intriguing details about golf, and, when Malik gets his best friend involved in the game, just the right amount of conflict.
