Young Jimmu is forced into hiding after his family is betrayed by Lord Ankan, causing his father's suicide. Taught the ways of the samurai, Jimmu joins Lord Ankan's retinue and patiently waits to avenge his parents. The story provides an intriguing look at life in sixteenth-century Japan through an action-packed hero's tale of self-discovery, courage, and blossoming love.

Other than the theme of love, this British import has little to do with Shakespeare's play. Narrators Casey and Stewart each relate the mini-romances and heartbreaks they experience over Christmas break. The resolution is a little pat, but the alternating voices are credible.

For a class, fifteen-year-old Robert dons a dress and plays a Shakespearean heroine opposite his crush, Milena, who is acting the male role. The experience is emotionally liberating, and Robert is drawn to explore his female side. The subject of cross-gender issues is provocative and groundbreaking, but the plot of this import hinges on too many contrivances and Robert's complex problems seem too easily resolved.
