My Book Of series.
An introduction to prehistory touches on Earth's beginnings, describes various dinosaurs and how they lived, and explains the work of latter-day fossil hunters. The color art and caption text are adequate, but the survey of millions of years of history in a few double-page spreads tends toward the superficial. A list of museums and websites is included. Glos., ind.

Eyewitness Readers series.
Showcasing "some of the weirdest machines on earth," this book describes drag cars, powerboats, and the space shuttle, among others. The color photographs and illustrations will draw speed-loving readers, but the writing doesn't really convey the excitement of the vehicles. The pictures and captions in the book's wide margins distract from the main text. Glos.

Eyewitness Readers series.
While the many parasites that live in and around the human body--dust mites, bacteria, fleas, and lice--are usually little more than an annoyance, the detailed, close-up photographs and first-person narratives (from the parasites' perspective) give them an immediacy readers may (or may not) find fascinating. The text is geared toward independent readers and offers plenty of relevant information in an entertaining format. Glos.

A newspaper format is used to explore the history of four political revolutions. The oversized pages, illustrated with color artwork, use fictional contemporaneous articles, editorials, and even advertisements to provide a superficial view of the American and French revolutions in the eighteenth century, as well as the twentieth-century Russian and Chinese upheavals. The journalistic angle makes the volume entertaining, if slight. Ind.

Dinosaurs, as almost any kid knows by now, came in many varieties. Included in these pages are the massive plant eaters, the vicious carnivores, and the armored curiosities. Although somewhat bland, the illustrations help explain facts presented in the clearly written text. Unfortunately, there is little to distinguish this book from the many others on the same subject.
