The town of Sitting Duck again needs rescuing by friends Sam, Arty, and Emmie. The latest threats are massive man-eating spiders and a pirate curse that turns people to stone. New character profiles and sidebars are once again incongruously inserted within the text, occasionally disrupting the narrative. However, readers may enjoy the absurd humor, action, and cartoonish illustrations that run throughout both books. Review covers these titles: Disaster Diaries: Robots! and Disaster Diaries: Spiders!

When Arty's robot runs rampant and a protective security force quickly turns oppressive, Sam, Emmie, and Arty must save their town...again (Disaster Diaries: Brainwashed!). A sarcastic tone renders the fast-paced, life-or-death sci-fi action more humorous than scary. Cartoony illustrated character profiles and other asides are funny and informative but are more of a distraction here.

Having survived zombies and aliens in previous volumes, the people of Sitting Duck are ready to elect a new mayor and make a fresh start. But when a supervillain scientist mind-controls the townspeople, Sam and friends have to rescue everyone again. Silly dialogue, slapstick humor, and cartoony illustrated character profiles preclude any sense of real danger in this lighthearted sci-fi romp.
