Messenger, the titular artist, depicts the alphabet with cryptic Audubon-like illustrations rendered in watercolor and pencil. Acrobats form uppercase and lowercase As, caterpillars create Bs, and waves form Cs. While there isn't a clear link between subject and letter, the graceful, strange images in muted colors against clean cream backgrounds may fascinate readers as much as confuse them.

This handsome guidebook provides "documentation" of the author's journey to a magical island paradise. Gorgeously detailed illustrations depict such wonders as the pasta tree, the Double-Cream Cow, the Screaming Night Moth, and doll-like, cloven-footed inhabitants. This visual treat may be a jumping-off point for kids to create their own worlds of wonder.
