Morrison shows how the devastation of the 1946 Hawaiian tsunami led to creation of the Seismic Sea Wave Warning System, an elaborate network of seismographs and scientists intended to track and warn of earthquakes and subsequent tsunami waves. The clear text does a good job of balancing disaster drama and scientific information. Detailed paintings and diagrams and explanatory captions aid comprehension. Bib., glos.

George Davidson and colleagues from the U.S. Coast Survey began surveying the western coast of the U.S. in 1850; this book relates how they accomplished this technically and physically arduous task, impeded by rugged coastlines, difficult weather, hostile natives, and bad food. Detailed art conveys both scenery and surveying techniques particularly well; the narration begins slowly but then finds its stride. Bib., glos.

This well-researched account chronicles the life and accomplishments of sculptor James Fraser. Growing up in Dakota Territory and seeing the near extinction of the buffalo and the plight of the Sioux Indians, Fraser honored both with his design for the popular buffalo nickel. The lengthy text, accompanied by detailed illustrations, provides a great deal of information about the making of the coin. Bib., glos.

After a brief section explaining the animal's presence in the Hudson River Valley, this book recounts the discovery of a mastodon skeleton there in 1799 and Charles Willson Peale's subsequent expedition to purchase it and excavate another for his museum in Philadelphia. Dark, unpolished illustrations accompany the text. Bib., glos.

Sketch artists such as the fictitious one depicted here dodged bullets to document the Civil War in illustrations that would be published in newspapers and magazines some weeks later. Morrison describes each step in the engraving and printing process in great detail, focusing less on the chaos of the battlefield. This unusual piece of social history is enlivened by richly colored, textured oil paintings. Glos.

Morrison describes a day in the life of a cheetah family, as the mother, Duma, hunts to feed her hungry cubs. The story unobtrusively weaves in basic information about physical characteristics, hunting habits, and cub behavior. Realistic acrylic illustrations, many of which mimic stop-action photography, give a wonderful sense of the cheetah's agility and distinctive body language. An endnote touches on the cheetah's endangerment.
