While Max fights off assassins, demon forces assemble to annihilate Rowan Academy, humankind's last stand. Neff's pacing is deliberate during the preparations for war, offering comic interludes, dabbling in romance, and allowing Max and David to re-bond after their separate journeys of maturation. The buildup pays off in thrilling, climactic battle sequences. Readers will be left clamoring for book five.

Max and David saved Rowan Academy, but the rest of the world was lost to demons. Unable to resign himself to blissful ignorance in isolation, Max sets out into the nightmare landscape to fight back. Neff takes his time throughout this grim, introspective installment. Some comedic moments punctuate the darkness; the cliffhanger ending leaves readers hopeful.

Max and David, two preternaturally talented students at magical Rowan Academy, quest around the world and eventually beyond to prevent a demon from gaining the power to unmake creation. This dark sequel (the forces of good are continually defeated) swells in scale and scope, and Neff occasionally overrelies on summary, but overall his storytelling remains compelling.

His phantasmagoric vision admits Max to Rowan Academy, a boarding school that trains children with magical Potential to fight evil. Max's startling talent pales only in comparison to that of his roommate; together they uncover a plot to revive an ancient threat. Despite an over-reliance on formula, Neff's stylish prose, deft characterization, and synthesis of Celtic myth make for spellbinding storytelling.
