During a terrifying vampire attack, Emma's epileptic seizure interrupts the monster's feeding, preventing her from being fully "turned" while giving her super-vampire-like powers. Hiding at a NASA base, Emma meets an aspiring astronomer who helps her defeat the vampire. The overlong story sometimes struggles to connect its many strands, getting mired in exposition. However, its premise and characters are engaging.

Ronald Earl, a.k.a. "Little Texas," has been preaching since he was ten. Now, at almost sixteen, he begins to doubt his calling--just as a mysterious ghostly figure appears. The protagonist's compelling first-person narration, peppered with biblical language, is full of relatable uncertainty. As the story accelerates, readers will find themselves startled by both the personal and actual demons Little Texas must face.

Following eleven years of silence, Afton contacts Frances, who embarks on a cross-country road trip with her new boyfriend to come to terms with her past. The two strands--budding romance and nightmarish psychological exhumation--coexist more than interact but achieve overall success with idiosyncratic characters and addictive suspense.
