Translated by Tara Chace.
In the series' fourth outing, getting-on-in-years farmer Pettson and his talking cat, Findus, intend to pitch their tent in the woods, but the hens sabotage their plan. As always, Nordqvist's detailed art is a thoughtful homage to the master-pet bond and to country life's languorous pleasures. This is also reflected in the somewhat sluggish storytelling, which rewards those who hang in there.

Thoughtful farmer Pettson and his talking cat, Findus, scheme to stop a fox from gobbling their chickens. While there's much humor, warmth, and cleverness in the telling, as with some of the other Pettson and Findus books, the journey can feel overly long. The art is like the story: droll, stuffed with detail, and favorably reminiscent of an earlier era.

It's cat Findus's birthday, and Pettson, his eccentric elderly-farmer owner, is intent to make him his customary cake out of pancakes, which leads to a comedy of errors involving a sleeping bull. As in Findus Disappears!, Nordqvist takes his time, giving equal attention to the plot and the cat-human friendship. Also attentive are the illustrations, featuring bushels of country-life details.

Pettson, a lonely old farmer, meets cat Findus, who becomes his pet and best friend. Once Nordqvist establishes their relationship, he has Findus barely escaping from a badger, but the book's real focus is the charming cat-human bond. Nordqvist doesn't rush, offering naturalistic details in both the text and the plainspoken art, which makes the occasional incongruous foray into slapstick.
