These formulaic books, supplemented with color and black-and-white illustrations, each look at an African country emerging from centuries of colonization, racism, and oppression to confront conflicts drawn along racial, tribal, and religious lines. There is sufficient information here for school reports. Kenya lists websites. "Facts at a Glance," maps, reading list, timeline. Ind. This fairly dense introduction to Ghana, a nation rich in history, natural resources, and decades of political upheaval, is somewhat marred by the authors' (one of whom is a Ghanaian expat) subjective political perspective. Color photos with detailed captions provide additional information about the geography, economics, government, and culture. Reading list, websites. Ind.
