Eleven-year-old Yonder has not spoken since her mother's death four years earlier, her father has sunk into drunken depression, and she's bullied at school. The companionship and comfort Yonder finds with a neglected Shetland pony named Dirt help her through. This sympathetic character's story of loss and healing, while not very subtle, should resonate with kids who share Yonder's affinity for animals.

In this deliciously creepy and sad contemporary Gothic tale, Noah, a conjoined twin whose brother died during their separation operation, fears his twin is actually alive and murdering people in his neighborhood. Absorbingly told in the dual perspectives of Noah and his caretaker, Grace, the truth is slowly revealed as both come to grips with pain and loss.

Late 1960s Alaska is the evocative setting of this story narrated by four teenagers from varied cultural backgrounds. Each has some connection with Dove Lexie, a mixed-raced youth who mysteriously disappears after being imprisoned. Leisurely paced, this multilayered, sophisticated novel would be a good choice for young readers transitioning to more mature books.
