After a disappointing first meeting with her three soon-to-be stepsisters, twelve-year-old Avery has only a few weeks until her father's wedding to find common ground with the girls. Palmer deftly shows the complications of two families blending together, including awkward moments and heightened emotions. Avery is a fully developed character, but the stepsisters lack complexity.

In her third adventure, Lucy is running for class president--on the platform of ending "dork discrimination"--while waiting to become a big-stepsister. As always, she wins out against the haters. Lucy's voice continues to be unconvincingly--and unevenly--too old and too young for a twelve-year-old. Nevertheless, the book may still appeal to those who have enjoyed the series' Hannah Montana–like stepsister dynamic.

Lucy is just getting used to her teen superstar "frister" (friend/stepsister) Laurel when she's sent out to Laurel's LA movie set. There Lucy catches the eye of an older boy and has her first kiss. Though the plot of this series entry is contrived and Lucy's obsession with a television shrink continues to go nowhere, the up-and-down stepsibling dynamics are realistically portrayed.

Being "friend-dumped" in sixth grade is bad enough, but when Lucy's mom starts dating young starlet Laurel's dad, Lucy despairs. How can she ever measure up to the most popular teen in the world as her new stepsister? Some notes of preteen angst are just right, but details like a grade-wide first period log feel as contrived as the trendy plot.
