In prose that strains slightly for lyricism, the author describes wild horses, their range in South Dakota, and how a rancher (and sometimes-children's book author) named Dayton Hyde fought to create a preserve for them in the 1980s. The account doesn't cohere around a single focus, but horse lovers won't mind. And they will certainly appreciate the nature shots of mustangs romping in the wild.

This overview looks at how three Montana ranching families manage their livestock's grazing habits by rotating the herds among several pastures to preserve the environment. The attractive color photos, which depict wildlife, grazing livestock, and the ranchers, would have benefited from some comparison photos showing the environmental damage done without rotational grazing.

Using the first-person voice of her husband as narrator, Peterson crafts a warmly personal look at their family farm, noting both constants and changes over the farm's hundred-year history. Family album photographs, reproduced in soft-edged sepia, give descriptions of the past a nostalgic yet immediate appeal and contrast well with the sharp-edged full-color contemporary shots.
