Caveman Dave thinks his rock is better than caveman Jon's: "Dave's rock bigger"; one throw later, he realizes that "Jon's rock faster." Their rivalry builds until they find a creative way to defuse it. The blunt art serves the prehistoric milieu, and the book's humor--the protagonists' immaturity, their caveman-speak--illuminates the stupidity of fighting over small (albeit heavy) things.

Pre-readers will enjoy examining each spread of this "visual catalog" and identifying the various animals, plants, and objects within various categories, including "Kitchen," "Bugs," "Playground," and "Things That Go." Each item is clearly labeled, but after enough repetition, the big googly eyes on each item (animate or not) seem overly stylized and unnecessary.

Pepper enjoys life as an only cat, dozing, playing, and tormenting the dog. "But on Wednesday, something changed." Presented with a kitten, Pepper reacts with horror. By Sunday the two have become allies, blaming the dog for a mess. The use of humor and animal characters lightens any hint of a heavy message in this story of sibling rivalry.

Three siblings puzzle over the unknown animal snoozing in a tree in their backyard. They imagine the animal as an astronaut, a pirate, and a knight before finding the answer and sending the ever-slumbering sloth to the rainforest. Illustrations feature warm colors, rounded shapes, and plentiful white space. Some sloth facts are incorporated into the story; an ending twist provides more humor.
