Joyous digital and hand-painted watercolor illustrations capture the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and colors. The text's nuanced alliteration, its use of Spanglish, and the realistic linguistic mix in the illustrations (even the cat says both meow and miau) mark the specificity shaping Daisy's memory-making. Photographer Iturbide's story is told in comic-panel format, with striking black-and-white illustrations, high-quality reproductions of her own photographs, and spare first-person narration drawing upon her writing and interviews; interspersed are section introductions in a more conversational third-person, direct-address text. (3) 1-3 Illustrated by Tom Knight. Rumor has it Ugly Cat's missing brother, Tamarindo, was last seen at a haunted casa. With unlikely, oddball buddies Pablo (mouse) and Big Mike (dog), Ugly Cat sets out to vanquish the ghosts and recover Tamarindo. Font styles helpfully change for each character, and black-and-white illustrations are generously sprinkled throughout the friends' wacky second tale (Ugly Cat & Pablo). Glos.

(4) 1-3 Illustrated by Tom Knight. Seeking adventure, well-dressed mouse Pablo and his best bud, Ugly Cat, devise a thinly plotted plan to obtain paletas, Ugly Cat's favorite ice-pop treat. Their scheme quickly goes awry, and predictable, overly silly antics ensue. Useful for emergent readers, font variations highlight speakers, and Spanish words and phrases are incorporated throughout. Abundant black-and-white illustrations add humor to the mildly entertaining capers of this oddball pair. Glos.

(3) YA Gabi, a light-skinned Hispanic girl who is maybe a little bit too curvy, is no stranger to trouble. Her father is a meth addict, her brother's a budding graffiti artist, her best friend's pregnant, and another friend is homeless after coming out to his father. Blisteringly honest diary entries mix with poetry to create a beautifully distinct and powerful voice.
