Now Zan must solve her uncle's murder and recover an artifact he died trying to preserve. The exotic setting and thrilling events don't overshadow Renn's believable characterization.

But her life falls apart after international cycling sensation Juan Carlos is killed at a charity bike race--and Tess is the last one to see him alive. From Massachusetts to Ecuador, Renn creates rich settings, but the details don't detract from the mystery's suspense.

After a Seattle art heist, sixteen-year-old Violet and her artist father are embroiled in the mystery of the powerful Yamada family's long-ago-hidden van Gogh painting; soon they're off to Tokyo. Renn's authorial missteps include a too-young-sounding narrator, credulity stretching, and awkward dialogue, but with a super-cool premise, rich settings, yakuza (Japanese gangsters), and hip art-world details, some readers won't mind.
