Since Owen's mother's death, his author father hasn't written a word. After Owen pushes his father to write again, Owen disappears from class--and enters the dark and dangerous world of his brokenhearted father's story. The parallel between grief and literal darkness is unsubtle but doesn't detract too much from Owen's compelling adventure.
