Flashbacks slowly reveal how both girls came to be in danger, ratcheting up the tension. But prepare to suspend disbelief as characters act unrealistically and excessively violent and overt bullying goes unchecked.

Although the alternating narration, especially chapters narrated by "Nothing," is a bit confusing, the high-stakes plot and tense atmosphere will thrill fans of post-apocalyptic fiction.

Earthquakes cause a large proportion of the earth's population to become raging maniacs bent on homicide. Four teens who seem unaffected gradually come together in order to survive. Though the characters are generally indistinguishable, an intriguing premise and the story's fast pacing will attract sci-fi fans. The book's many unanswered questions may be addressed in sequels.
