Vera finally gets to join her older sisters for a night of trick-or-treating. Fall quickly turns wintry, with rain, sleet, and snow, and Vera's much-anticipated evening unravels (along with her mummy costume) as she loses her family, her candy, and her way. Light, playful watercolors keep the tension just right for younger readers, with Vera's adventure ending safely at a friend's door.

Vera's the new kid at school. On her first day, Vera's classmates make fun of her picture in art class and her sandwich at lunch. Then, at an outdoor assembly, she and another girl accidentally sit on an anthill; their shared experience dealing with ant bites makes them friends. Rosenberry's slightly caricatured portrayals suit the simple but unusual slice-of-life story.

Vera can't escape her new baby sister's intrusion anywhere; only Grandfather seems to notice and understand. His plan to build a backyard "bean tent" with Vera works wonders, and by summer the beanstalks offer Vera a quiet retreat. In Rosenberry's detailed paintings, the bean tent transforms Vera (and Ruthie in Vera's eyes) and nurtures the sisters' burgeoning relationship.

Rosenberry pitches the everyday as both simple and dramatic. When Vera outgrows her tricycle, her parents refurbish her sister's old bike. Though she hasn't learned to stop, Vera sets off on a solo trip around the school yard one evening and must muster her courage to stop on her own when she wants to go home. Rosenberry gives the gently caricatured Vera expressions appropriate to the situations.

Alfred's mother plants some apple seeds when he is a baby; when he turns one, "his baby apple tree was exactly his height." Following both boy and tree through youth and maturity to death and the continuation of life through their descendants, this book is a gentle portrayal of the cycles of life. Bright watercolor illustrations show Alfred and the tree throughout the seasons.

On her first visit to the dentist, Vera is very brave until the whirring teeth-cleaning machine sends her sprinting out the door. This fourth book starring the feisty heroine and her family will appeal to Vera fans. The text takes readers step by step through the experience and may help children calm their own fears about routine dental visits. Rosenberry's lively gouache illustrations add humor to the presentation.

A young boy explores a garden, discovering creatures in every corner--a garter snake coiled among grapevines, a turtle napping beneath rhubarb leaves, worms wiggling through the dirt--until he finds his own private place. The rhythmic free-verse text is illustrated with realistic watercolors, which, though sometimes too pale, home in on the bounty of a fertile garden.

Disappointed with her busy family's less-than-excited reaction to her report card, Vera runs away from home to look for a "better family." Ultimately, hunger pangs lead Vera home to a frantic family who missed her very much. Rosenberry's gouache illustrations picture a hilarious and chaotic household; the characters' exaggerated facial and body expressions add a unique liveliness to the drama.

Two children energetically explore the four seasons by running after fireflies, jumping in leaves, whizzing across frozen ponds, and splashing in a spring-flooded creek amid bobbing bluebells. The sense-rich text is complemented by the subtle, textured watercolor paintings showing the children celebrating the outdoors and, on the last page, coming in from the rain for cookies and cocoa.

Though excited about beginning school, Vera hesitates when she sees "more children than she had ever seen before." Standing at the edge of the schoolyard, Vera hears the bell ring just as the doors are closing and goes home, defeated--but her mother saves the day. Rosenberry's playful, brightly colored gouache illustrations capture Vera's jubilation-turned-dismay.

Poor Vera has spots everywhere, "even between her toes and inside her ears." While the words capture her unhappiness and isolation, the pictures counter with playful animation and humor; for instance, Vera's toy bunny comically mimics the process of her recovery. Any child who's ever been sick and confined to bed will find this book right on the mark.
