Ricky, a bisexual teen, is committed to Brookline Asylum and subjected to terrifying mind-control experiments in this 1968-set prequel to Asylum. In Kay, an African American transgender girl, Ricky finds understanding and romance; together they lead a revolt against Warden Crawford. The story is frequently melodramatic but suspenseful, with real-world and supernatural horrors alike. Haunting black-and-white photo illustrations add to the creepy atmosphere.

On what should be a relaxing road trip to New Orleans, Dan, Abby, and Jordan (Asylum; Sanctum) are unwillingly drawn back into investigating the horrifying history of Brookline Sanatorium--plus its (somewhat convoluted) connection to Dan and a new mystery surrounding a local cult. Human and supernatural dangers provide action and scares, while New Orleans details and spooky stock photos add atmosphere.

Dan, Abby, and Jordan (Asylum) return to haunted psychiatric-hospital-cum-college-dorm Brookline to investigate an ominous message. This time they uncover connections among Dan's unscrupulous asylum-warden ancestor; a secret society gaining influence by hypnotizing and lobotomizing townsfolk; and a creepy on-campus carnival. Despite some inconsistent logic, the slightly gory suspense and atmospheric stock photos will keep horror fans turning pages.

Dan and the other students in his summer college prep program are being housed in a former insane asylum. Ghostly clues lead Dan to suspect that the spirit of a long-ago serial-killer patient is murdering again. Some plot twists strain belief, but brief chapters with plenty of cliffhangers keep pages turning. Appropriately unsettling stock photographs are integrated into the narrative.
