On each spread of this not-a-counting book, red-crayon-scribbled yarn balls accumulate in the white space around a cat. As the minimal text "counts" the toys, spare, fluid ink strokes with digital washes of gray communicate the expressive feline's humorous emotional progression. The cat goes from dismayed to pleased ("none" to "four"), overjoyed to overwhelmed ("more" to "too many"), and finally contented ("enough").

Adventurous Anna, with her more cautious friend Crocodile, concocts a plan to "FIND GOLD." Throughout, Schwarz's pencil, crayon, and watercolor illustrations adopt a childlike style. They're at their finest in a pair of wordless spreads that show Anna and Crocodile diving down to a shipwreck; these rich, detailed illustrations stand in contrast with other text-heavy spreads of humorous dialogue between the friends.

Three cats extend a welcome to readers: "Hello! You look friendly." The felines are trying to leave their book to go "see the world," and they ask for readers' help. The clever format includes an extended foldout page ("Everybody PUSH...") and a central pop-up ("Let's JUMP out!"). Creative concept and unfussy illustrations combine for a satisfying interactive reading experience.

Timothy's mother's sturdy mending transforms his favorite pajamas into super pajamas. Heroic rescues ensue until the pajamas rip, losing their power. It's a beguiling premise, affectionately developed in boldly limned illustrations where comic book–style dialogue balloons are supplemented with narrative; meanwhile, frames and vignettes open into imaginative vistas, bright with saturated colors. Lively, funny, and true to the spirit of play.

Three playful cats invite readers to join in their feline games. Readers are coaxed to turn pages and lift flaps to facilitate the kitties' pillow fight, yarn tug-of-war, and cardboard box hide-and-seek. Lively brush and ink art, dynamic book design, and interactive text work well together in the simple story.

Illustrated by
Joel Stewart.
Looking like a Salvador Dali creation, a walking nose--he has legs jutting from his nostrils--travels around trying to find a place where he can "fit in and stick out." While the theme isn't new, this pleasingly surreal quest for belonging does have a droll twist, in that, wherever the nose goes, he always appears in the mixed-media illustrations to be right where he belongs, in the middle of a face.
